BJ grew up in a church family & with a strict father which he explains in this Soulection interview on how this environment made him the man he is and how his soulful energy is illuminated through his music. One of BJ's strongest assets as a musical artist is his amazing ability to sing and be a songwriter respectively. Thus, at the age of 19 he moved to California to pursue his music career and began singing backup for gospel stars such as Mary Mary and he also would contribute his vocals to the legendary Stevie Wonder on his project "A Time To Love" (2005). Since then he has been working behind-the-scenes with many marquee great artists across many genres in the music game such as Lalah Hathaway, Musiq Soulchild, Mary J. Blige and Jill Scott. BJ resume also includes work with contemporary artists such as Madlib, Dom Kennedy, Kendrick Lamar, SchoolBoy Q, Ab-Soul, Twista & Anderson Paak. BJ even shared his vocal's on a promotional track Kanye West did for the "Mission Impossible III" film called, "Impossible". The Chicago Kid also teamed up with the likes of J.Cole on the still unreleased track, "Shock The World" he did with Kendrick Lamar.
After releasing his first full length project "Pineapple Now-Laters" with the single "Good Luv'n" he was signed to the legendary Motown Records. His latest album "In My Mind", was recently released on February 19th, 2016 and the album is an incredible work with a very genuine and Neo-Soul vibe of a man who is still fighting for his people and telling his story in his own way. In this Soulection interview, BJ confidently states "I am here to provide a balance and new perspective on a legendary label... This music is for us. I am the Al Green when he wore the vest with no shirt and just the gold chains. I am the Marvin Gaye, I am the Stevie Wonder of this generation. I bring that potency and that strength."
