Next to Drake, arguably one of the most successful artists to come out of Toronto, Canada is undoubtedly the twenty-nine year old grammy winning producer, "Boi-1da". Born, "Matthew Samuels" on October 12th, 1986 in Jamacia, Boi-1da moved to Toronto at the age of three and would begin practicing his craft at a very young age when his mother bought him a keyboard. Samuels would start taking music more seriously in High School when he purchased the production program, "Fruity Loops" and would instantly fall in love with producing.
In this Fader interview, Boi-1da reveals that even his mother at one point was using the production program, "Reason" and a sound kit inspired by the artist, "Pharrell Williams" to make her own beats. After grinding and truly loving the process of constantly producing music for a couple of years, Boi-1da would enter and win the Battle of the Beatmakers Competition three years in a row. This would generate plenty of buzz for the upcoming producer and this would allow him to meet a young and rising MC at the time in Drake.
From the beginning Boi-1da and Drake would develop a beautiful chemistry with their music as they would cultivate multiple hit songs together that include but are not limited to, "Best I Ever Had", "Headlines" ,"0 to 100" and "Forever". His success working with Drake would jumpstart his career and since has worked with many brand name artists such as "Kendrick Lamar", with the grammy winning song, "The Blacker The Berry", "Jay Z", "Eminem", and "Big Sean". Boi 1-da even is credited with the sample for the hit song, "Real Friends", off Kanye West's new album, "The Life of Pablo". Going forward the seven time grammy nominated producer plans on venturing into other genres that include pop and rock music to further expand his skill set and artistry respectively!
