The Haitian-Canadian genre blending superproducer who was born "Louis Kevin Celestin" on August 25th, 1992 in Montreal, Canada is one of the OG artists who started the trend of posting remixes of classic 90s songs on Soundcloud. Known now to his worldwide fan base simply as, "Kaytranada" he began touring off his music after grinding and releasing music consistently for almost a decade when he released his 2013 Soundcloud remix of ,"Janet Jackson's" song, "If".
In this interview, Kaytranada illuminates on how his stage name came to be via, "Nostradamus". Aside from worshipping the music from the legendary artists J.Dilla and Madlib, Kaytranada grew up listening to a melting pot of diverse music ranging from Haitian music, "Micheal Jackson", "Bob Marley", "Diana Ross" and "Robert Glasper". Kaytranada began his musical career DJing long before producing at the age of fourteen and once his little brother and MC, "Louis-Philippe" showed him the basics of the production Fruity Loops then he never looked back and began to make a beat every day.
Kaytranada even released a project with his brother called, "Supreme Laziness" under the group name, "The Celestics" with Kay on the production and his sibling rapping over the luscious production. After releasing multiple EP's and Remixes on his Bandcamp and Soundcloud, he would finally be signed to XL Recordings which would provide the perfect platform to release his debut album, "99.9%". 99.9% was not only a smooth blend of his upbeat electronic/dance/hip-hop beats and featured some great vocals from Goldlink, Vic Mensa, Phonte, Anderson .Paak, and many more. He even released an interactive game alongside the album that gives fans a chance to play and win an exclusive hidden track from 99.9%.
