There are few producers who are more prolific and successful in the 21st Century than the multi-instrumentalist, DJ, MC and composer, "Otis Jackson Jr" who is better known by the moniker, "Madlib". Madlib has worked with many legendary artists under many different monikers that include, "MF Doom" (as the legendary Hip-Hop group Madvillainy) along with the late great, "J.Dilla" (as Jaylib). Otis was born in Oxnard, California on October 24th, 1973 to two professional musicians, his mom being a pianist and his father, "Otis Jackson Sr.".
Music has always been natural for Madlib due to his upbringing with access to his father's studio equipment which has been invaluable to his musical foundation. One of Madlib's first pieces of studio equipment was a, "Casio SK1" beat machine and has been making beats since he initially received the beat machine in Junior High School. His musical influences come from the funk based music his father would introduce to him along with his Hip-Hop influences that includes but not limited to, "Marley Marl", "DJ Pooh" and "Dr. Dre".
Madlib would continue to grind and produce music with his crew, "Lootpack" which consisted of the dope artists, "Wildchild", "DJ Rhomes" and himself. The crew's first big break would come when their first demo would get into the hands of King Tee who really like the project and would allow them to get onto a track for his album called, "Mary Jane" with, "The Alkaholiks". Eventually the Lootpack would be put out by Madlib's father Otis Jackson Sr. which would eventually help land them a deal with the legendary Hip-Hop record label, "Stonesthrow Records" founded by one of Madlib's best friends, "Peanut Butter Wolf" .
From here Madlib's musical output and reputation would rise to unseen heights within Hip-Hop culture by creating his pitched alter ego, "Quasimoto" due to his distaste for his own voice but still the yearn to express himself on the microphone. The albums he would release under this moniker would start first with, "The Unseen" in 2000 and then would release his next two projects, "The Further Adventures of Lord Quas (2005)" and "Yessir Whatever (2013)" under this moniker.
Madlib is responsible for the beautiful sonic diversity of Stonesthrow Records. Aside from his work as Quasimoto, Madlib also released a 7 part project under the aliases, "Beat Konducta" and "Loopdigga" in 2006. Madlib has also worked with the talented MC, "Freddie Gibbs" as, "Madgibbs" for the album, "Piñata" (2014) and also produced music for the ultra talented soulful artist, "Erykah Badu" for her album, "New Amerykah Part 1" (2008). The Oxnard born producer even landed a beat placement on Kanye West's album, "The Life of Pablo" with the single, "No More Parties In LA", which he produced on an iPad, and co-produced also by Kayne as well.
This masterful musician has been recently working on finishing the last part of his "Beat Konducta" album series and we also encourage you to check out the hour-long lecture below from Madlib hosted by the Red Bull Music Academy.
