Sounwave

Top Dawg Entertainment has been taking the music industry by storm since the early beginnings of the 21st Century and has undoubtedly done so with their stellar in house production team known as, "Digi+Phonics".  This production team is a crucial component is equally as important as any of the other perfectly cultivated pieces of the musical powerhouse known as Top Dawg Entertainment.  Digi+Phonics consists of four producers who all hail from California in, "Tae Beast", "Dave Free", "Willie B" & "Sounwave". Sounwave who is better known as, "Mark Spears" to the government is one quarter of the Digi+Phoincs production team who hails from Compton, California and who's musical moniker originates from the Transformer's figure that disguises itself as a Microcassette recorder. Sounwave's story that inspired him to start making beats is simply his experience of first hearing the instrumental to the ,"Timbaland" produced track, "Up Jumps Da Boogie"  as he explains in this Fader magazine feature. From then on, his Father recognized his passion and would purchase him his first piece of musical equipment when he gifted Spears with a basic Korg Pad Drum Machine at the age of 10Sounwave would continue to hone and develop his producing skills on the Korg until he bought himself a 4 Track recording machine which would allow him to progressively migrate his talents to the MTV Music Generator for the Playstation gaming console. This Music Generator would earn him his first beat placement on a Bishop Lamont record for the radio. After graduating High School his cousin bought him his first MPC and from there he fell in love with producing music until his close friend "Punch" (who is also the co-founder of "Top Dawg Entertainment") offered him the opportunity of the lifetime to audition to become an in-house producer for TDE. After multiple meetings with Top Dawg (the cousin of Punch), he would eventually deliver Top an amazing beat that would impress him enough to place Sounwave on the TDE team.

Sounwave would take advantage of this opportunity and would continue to excel and take advantage of this connection by impressing legendary producers such as, "Dr. Dre" which instilled a huge sense of confidence within himself and his abilities. Sounwave gradually became one of Kendrick's main producers for the majority of his projects that include but are not limited to, "Kendrick Lamar EP", "Overly Dedicated", "Good Kid Madd City" and "To Pimp A Butterfly". Sounwave has worked with Ab-Soul & SchoolBoy Q on their respective earlier albums, "Control System" & "Oxymoron". Most notably, Sounwave participated in crafting multiple hit records on Kendrick's platinum selling album, "To Pimp A Butterfly" which has been credited by most a modern day classic Hip Hop album with the tracks, "Alright", "King Kunta", "These Walls" & "Hood Politics". Sounwave even has produced the multi platinum selling single for Kendrick Lamar known as, "Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe". In this Billboard interview, Sounwave strongly asserts that his work ethic is something that he prides himself in as he plans to teach himself every instrument in order to take him and his team to the highest level they can reach musically.
